THERE'S no need to blame that early Christmas tipple or dodgy specs, Santa Claus really did drop in to the Illawarra on Wednesday.

Santa and his elite team of slightly suspect looking "reindeer" made a splash on Wollongong's North Beach while checking out landing conditions in preparation for the KidzWish Christmas party next week.

About 2500 of the region's sick, disabled and disadvantaged children will attend the fun-filled event at WIN Entertainment Centre, which will include lots of entertainment, food and even presents from the big jolly man himself.

KidzWish spokeswoman Rhianna Sattin said Santa was always thrilled to appear at the party, but he also had some competition in the popularity stakes.

"He's very excited," she said.

"Santa is the star of the show but surprisingly enough so is Ronald McDonald."

Ms Sattin said the party was pretty much ready to go next Friday, with preparations coming together like clockwork.

"All the arrangements are done and now we're just putting together some last-minute details," she said.

"Today we were filming a little bit of a skit where Santa has a mistaken arrival."

Santa's reindeer were temporarily substituted by Shetland ponies from Matilda's Farmyard Nursery.
