SANTA Claus Pub Crawl organiser Neil Webster says the event's Facebook site has more than 1700 people indicating they will take part in the event this year.

Around 900 people participated last year.

Not only is Wollongong attracting record crowds, it also boasts the longest running Santa Pub Crawl in the world - being held for more than 14 years.

It started from humble beginnings when a small group of friends decided to raise some Christmas spirit by dressing in something Christmasy and donating an unwrapped Christmas toy to the collection point at the North Gong Hotel by 7pm.

Gifts are then donated to the Salvation Army for distribution to needy children throughout the Illawarra.

More than 750 toys were donated to the Salvos last year and Mr Webster said this Saturday's target was 1000.
